Surfing in the warm waters of ray bay was part of growing up for me. You learn the stingray shuffle quickly and you also learn to get on the board a paddle quickly vs walking further out even when it’s shallow. Companies also make stingray resistant surfing booties now.

Seal Beach was my beach most every Summer day throughout my early life during the ‘60’s. All of us kids knew how to shuffle, not step, making our way out to the waves. Luckily I was never stung; but saw many a ray. We knew we were sharing the surf with “sand sharks” too; but were never bothered by them. The water in “the jetty” was always at least 10 degrees warmer than water at the Pier. Caught many a Bonita in the Jetty. Saw very few Seals.
